LiberEarth
The consultancy of Jacopo Giuntoli, PhD
Why "LiberEarth"?
I have chosen the name ‘LiberEarth’ because it reflects my idea of what a sustainable future should look like. A future in which our struggle for sustainability is actually a struggle for Liberation from the capitalist and imperialist exploitation and oppression of human beings and other-than-human species.
LiberEarth stands for the physical liberation of land from capitalist exploitation, for the ecological liberation of the planet from human-induced environmental pressures; and for the moral liberation of humanity from the anthropocentric worldview which has fuelled the incessant exploitation of Nature and enslavement of non-human species for profit.
LiberEarth stands unequivocally for a #FreePalestine 🇵🇸. Donate to any of these fundraisers if you can. 👇
About me
My name is Jacopo Giuntoli, I am a sustainability researcher with broad-ranging expertise on bioenergy, bioeconomy, and climate and energy policies.
I have worked for the past 14 years assessing the environmental impacts of bioenergy and bio-based products through Life Cycle Assessment.
I have worked most of my career at the boundary between science and policy, as my portfolio shows. I have dedicated my career to exploring the potential trade-offs between bioenergy deployment and the risks for climate and ecosystems' health to support European policymakers make better choices for the environment. For instance, in 2013 our report on carbon accounting of forest bioenergy opened up a debate which continues today. In 2022 I complemented that analysis with a review on the impacts of forest bioenergy on biodiversity.
I was the main author of the GHG Default values for solid and gaseous biomass fuels which are published in the Directive 2018/2001 (i.e. the Renewable Energy Directive - REDII).
Our latest project, called 'Integrated Bioeconomy Land Use Assessment' (or IBLUA), aims to develop a Quantitative Storytelling approach, funded on Post-Normal Science ethos, and relying on the MuSIASEM accounting framework developed by Prof. Mario Giampietro. One of the goals of the project is to develop an analysis of the social-ecological metabolism of the EU bioeconomy.
Currently I am an independent, freelance, research consultant and this website functions at the moment mainly as a portfolio of my activity (Showcase), a repository of my work (Publications), and a gateway to contact me or contract my services (Contact). In the Communication section I collect my Tweets, vent my thoughts, and share my latest research ideas.
